Mark Richard was born in Louisiana. He left university in his third year to work on ocean-going trawlers and fishing boats for three years, before returning to study journalism. His first collection of stories, ICE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WORLD, received the 1990 PEN/Ernest Hemingway Foundation Award.
