This is a biography of the playwright and television dramatist Dennis Potter. Stephen Gilbert explores his work alongside a study of Potter himself - how his underprivileged childhood and debilitating illness were constant themes in his work and yet never curtailed his ambitions.

W. Stephen Gilbert has worked widely in television, having produced many dramas including the acclaimed King of the Ghetto for BBC2. He is also a novelist, critic and journalist, contributing to The Guardian, The Observer and The Listener among others. His interest in Dennis Potter began in the 1960s, since when he has reviewed Potter's works and spoken about Potter on television.
