Synopsis

To Sri Lanka in 1984 comes Clara, a successful 30-year-old businesswoman in dire need of a relaxing holiday. She stays at the once grand, now slightly shabby Galle Face Hotel, where Vijay works as a waiter. Vijay has patiently worked himself, his young wife, Chandra, and his parents out of the shanty town into a small house in the Garden Slum, but he's up to his neck in debt and, like Clara, feels vaguely dissatisfied with his lot. The seemingly innocent relationship that develops between them has profound repercussions: often painful, ultimately inspiring.

À propos de l'auteur

After reading English at Oxford, where he supplemented his grant by writing for the Sunday Express, Peter Adamson went on to found the New Internationalist in 1970. He has also written and narrated various BBC television documentaries, and worked for UNICEF for fifteen years.
