Synopsis

This work is an updated version of "Micro-organisms in Action", published in 1991 as part of the "Focus on Biology" series. This text has been rewritten to encompass new topics on the syllabus, such as vaccines and genetic engineering. It combines biotechnology, microbiology, pathology and immunity and is a comprehensive text for those studying the Microbes and Biotechnology module as part of their A level Biology course. As well as updating the text, the author has added extra features which are designed to take students step-by-step through a number of biotechnology practical experiments. Important features are highlighted in red, and a section is included on Internet resources which enables students to use their computers for further research into areas covered. Also featured is a section on biological suppliers, so that teachers can order apparatus required for practical sessions.

Revue de presse

For students of post-16 courses in biology and human biology, this text offers a modern classification of the micro-organisms and an account of modern biotechnology with reflection on benefits and shortcomings. Explanation and illustration are lucid, and questions of varying types follow the end-of-chapter summaries, to assist consolidation and application. The appendix of internet resources is useful.
