In some respects this book reads like a traditional textbook, with Periodic Table, circulation system, energy, etc., but in other ways it gets into areas where science textbooks don't usually go, such as COSHH regulations, dealing with laboratory accidents, and risk assessments. It gives much more emphasis to how scientists use science.

The book is well laid out and has very clear pictures and diagrams. Calculations are clearly set out and explained. New words are explained when they first appear in the text. (School Science Review 2003-09-01)
