‘Why you lose at bridge’ was written by Seca Jascha Skidelsky (1904 - 1948), better known as S. J. Simon. Simon was a multi-talented writer, helping to write a series of short comical stories with his professional partner Caryl Brahms. He was also highly successful in the world of bridge; resulting in the current text. He won the Gold Cup twice (1937 and 1947) and took the European Team Championship in 1948. This classic work was penned in 1945, and contains the now standard ‘Acol’ bidding system – which is now used in almost all British tournament play. This book contains an author biography, briefly detailing Simon’s life, an introduction to the text, and the ‘advice’ itself. The chapters are arranged thematically, first dealing with ‘the points you lose’, explaining ‘ignoring the odds’, ‘playing the dummy’, ‘in defence’, ‘bidding’ and ‘not doubling.’ Constructive advice is also included on how to ‘build your battlefield’, ‘the logic luck’ and why you shouldn’t teach your partner! It is essential reading for anyone interested in bridge tactics; an informative yet engaging read.
