A Mordell Conjecture Probe - the most powerful informational device yet developed - has fallen into the hands of the Pranksters, a mysterious and violently eccentric anarchist group. With the Probe in their hands World Government (already a shaky edifice of plot and counter-plot) could plunge into absolute chaos. Meanwhile a ship sets out from the Hub, its mission to intercept and analyse the huge gas cloud that has appeared in near space. But as the ship approaches it, the cloud, impossibly, becomes a solid mass. And as the bewildered crew sets off to explore it, reality itself begins to bend and break up.
