Regression yses are usually expressed in terms of a dependent variable, which we call a response vari able. Likewise, we use the term explanatory variable to indicate what is often called an independent vari able. Our reason for not using the terms dependent and independent is to avoid confusion when we dis cuss mathematical independence (orthogonality), a condition that plays a critical role in this article.
