Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book offers a unique insight into the development of urban governance during the 13th century, through an examination of the Etablissements de Rouen, a pivotal document in the history of municipal law. At its heart lies the concept of shared governance between the monarch and the citizens, a concept that would profoundly influence the development of urban centers throughout Europe. The author analyzes the Etablissements' provisions, contextualizing them within the broader social, political, and economic landscape of the time. Key themes emerge, including the role of the guilds, the tension between royal and local authority, and the interplay between customary law and emergent written codes. The author also explores the ways in which the Etablissements shaped urban life, influencing everything from trade and commerce to public works and sanitation. Through this detailed examination, the book sheds light on the origins of modern urban governance, offering valuable insights into the foundations of our contemporary cities. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
