Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is an exploration of the ancient Greek poet Sappho and the lyrical poetry she composed for the elite women of Lesbos and Mytilene. These women formed religious and social bonds, known as thiasoi, and during religious rituals the collected poems of Sappho, known as the "Songbook", would be performed in honour of the goddess Aphrodite. The book examines the rare and precarious freedoms available to the female members of these thiasoi, both in life and expression, and the ways in which Sappho's lyric style has advanced the art of poetry. Sappho, one of the few prominent female poets of the Greek era and practically of the ancient world, left behind a cache of verse unlike any crafted before or since. As one of the Western world's earliest literary voices, Sappho was a pioneer whose exploration of personal and private experiences and emotions, especially with regards to female relationships and desire, broke boundaries and would help to lay the foundation for lyric poetry as we know it today. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. N° de réf. du vendeur 9780365319788_0
