The model, developed from data taken in pine stands at Petawawa, Ontario, goes beyond current systems by including a method of accounting for the drying of surface fuels by solar radiation. Initial fuel moisture is determined using one of five options based on weather data from the past week. The model can also account for elevation differences by adjusting temperature and humidity to the fire location. The model's accuracy is validated against measured data, and its performance is found to be good in both shaded and sunny conditions. The Canadian Standard Daily Fine Fuel Moisture Code (FFMC) is described, as is a Canadian Hourly Fine Fuel Moisture Code. The book concludes by discussing diurnal predictions, and presents nomenclature, and equations used to derive the model, as well as additional appendices with methods for correcting initial shade conditions and determining sunrise and sunset.
