Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the water usage patterns of spring wheat crops grown on the Great Plains as determined in experimental conditions by the US Department of Agriculture Office of Dry-Land Agriculture Investigations. After introductory chapters on the problem and its contextual backdrop, this book analyzes the rate and total quantity of water used. This involves differentiating between the water derived from precipitation, the water already present in the soil, and the loss of water from the soil due to the combined effects of evaporation and plant use. The author examines experimental evidence to determine that spring wheat crops tend towards a constant rate of water use which is primarily determined by geographical location and secondarily by the size of the crop. Throughout, the author elucidates these patterns through tables and figures, and he concludes by noting that the yield of a wheat crop is determined more by the duration of rapid water use than the rate of use.
