Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book provides a deep and insightful analysis of U.S. agricultural export performance in international markets and the significance of market share as an indicator of export performance. The author develops an accounting framework, called trade-share accounting (TSA), which is capable of decomposing the effects of structural change on market share. By establishing the relationship between individual markets and the U.S. aggregate market share, the TSA method quantifies the effect that individual markets have on the overall U.S. agricultural market share in any given time interval. This method provides a unique and valuable perspective on the relationship between structure and performance in individual markets. The book examines the changing structure of world agricultural trade over the past 33 years and how these changes have affected the U.S. aggregate market share. The author identifies four distinct trends in the U.S. agricultural market share: the early period (1962-72), the expansion period (1972-81), the contraction period (1981-87), and the transition period (1987-94). The author concludes that the U.S. aggregate market share is not an indicator of performance and that changes in the aggregate market share reflect shifts in performance in all specific markets (individual market shares) as well as shifts in the direction and/or commodity structure of world agricultural trade (compositional shares). This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
