This book, published in 1868, brings together reflections from the author, a Superintendent of Virginia Military Institute, on the construction of a series of canals to connect disparate waterways for commercial and economic benefit in the mid-1800s. The author focuses specifically on the James River and Kanawha Canal, and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, as vital to the commerce of the western states and territories. He argues for the expansion of these canals to better connect the Ohio River with the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, a move which would enable cheaper and easier transportation of goods throughout the east and southeastern coasts of the United States. A series of detailed maps have been included to illustrate the geographical and commercial points made by the author throughout the text.
