Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the little-known but profound influence of a group of ancient Greek philosophers, the Pythagoreans, on the development of Western thought, particularly in the areas of mathematics, music, and philosophy. The author, an expert in ancient Greek philosophy, delves into the Pythagorean belief that the universe is governed by mathematical principles, a view that would profoundly shape the development of mathematics and the natural sciences. The book also examines the Pythagorean theory of music, which sought to establish mathematical relationships between musical intervals, and its influence on the development of Western music. Beyond their contributions to mathematics and music, the Pythagoreans also developed a comprehensive philosophical system that emphasized the importance of ethical living, the pursuit of knowledge, and the immortality of the soul. The author demonstrates how these ideas laid the foundation for later philosophical and religious traditions, including Platonism, Christianity, and Neoplatonism. This book offers a fresh and insightful perspective on the origins of Western intellectual thought, revealing the profound impact of the Pythagoreans on our understanding of the world and our place within it.
