This book postulates that the rhythmic form of traditional Arabic verse is a direct descendent of rhythmic elements inherent to the gait of the dromedary camel. The author argues that the earliest Arabic poetry, recited while camel riding, consisted of phrases that naturally fell into rhythmic patterns mirroring the gait of the camel. Over time, as these rhythms became refined, a series of strict metrical patterns emerged, each with its own unique rhythmic âmotive.â Each such motive, composed of a series of stressed and unstressed syllables, had its own rules for variation. These motives, the author shows, are not random constructs. They are, rather, grounded in the way camels naturally walk, with a firmly stressed footfall followed by one or two less stressed footfalls. This natural sequence of strong and weak accents would have been immediately recognizable to the early poets as a way to create rhythmic language. The author's theory elucidates the seeming complexity of traditional Arabic verse forms, revealing how they are not arbitrary or artificial constructions but are instead deeply rooted in the everyday experience of camel riding. This book is an important contribution to the study of Arabic poetry as it both establishes a new foundation for understanding the basics of Arabic meter and challenges dominant assumptions about the origins of poetic form.
