The author concludes that Illinois whole coals of high volatile A, B, and C bituminous rank have internal surface areas ranging from 46 to 292 square meters per gram, with the lowest values found for coals in southern Illinois, and the highest values found for the higher-rank coals in the extreme northern and northwestern counties of the Illinois coal basin.
