Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a part of a larger collection of charters, legal agreements, and copies of papal letters from the Hirsau Abbey. The documents, written in Latin, date from the ninth century to the beginning of the sixteenth century. Its subject is the history of the growth of the wealth and prestige of the Benedictine abbey of Hirsau and its relationship with local nobility. The abbey in the kingdom of Germany was founded by the Alamannian count Erlafrîd during the reign of Charlemagne and was dedicated to Saint Aurelia. This book and its charters trace the acquisition and growth of the monastery's influence across centuries. Throughout the text, selections include descriptions of the relics possessed by the various altars of the churches located on the monastic grounds. The charters also shed light on the evolving relationship between various popes and Holy Roman Emperors on the monastery's fortunes. The documents referenced in this book provide historians with a close look at the complex relationship between the leaders of the church and the greater nobility during the late medieval period. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
