Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book provides an overview of hand puppetry and the development of the 'Punch and Judy' puppet show in Europe. Beginning with the origins of puppetry in Asian courts, the author traces the spread of puppetry to Europe where it evolved under different traditions. Using the famous 'Punch and Judy' show as a focus, the author explores the popular marionette tradition. The book features a wealth of original texts and detailed descriptions of English, French, German and Italian puppet shows, revealing their cultural and social significance. An analysis of the dialogue and skits performed by these marionette shows uncovers the themes of social satire and carnivalesque that resonated with audiences of the period. The author argues that the 'Punch and Judy' puppet show is representative of the vernacular puppet tradition, offering valuable insights into popular entertainment and culture during its time. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
