Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book narrates the early life of Wolfgang Capito, who was a German theologian and a central figure in the Protestant Reformation. Born in 1478, Capito early on immersed himself in humanist studies, and became fluent in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. The author shows how Capito's humanist background influenced his theological positions, which were at odds with the Catholic Church's teachings. His leanings toward a new theological order, coupled with his humanistic predilections, brought him into contact with other Reformers like Martin Luther and Andreas Karlstadt. He also formed a close bond with Martin Bucer and Johannes Oecolampadius, with whom he promoted reform in Strasbourg, initially from the pulpit and later, from academic positions. These associations with like-minded reformers further bolstered Capito in his conviction that the Church should consider reforms, especially where the sale of indulgences was concerned. However, Capito was also a cautious man and did not embrace all of Luther's ideas. This book provides a detailed analysis of Capito's theological development, and his role in promoting a more moderate and humanist form of reform in Strasbourg and beyond.
