Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is an extensive review of Medieval German legal and social history. The author analyzes charters and legal records from the town of Büdingen and its surrounding villages to provide a detailed picture of how feudal social structures and relations of power were managed in the late Middle Ages. The author argues that earlier historians' reliance on single legal terms and concepts has led to fundamental misunderstandings of these societies, particularly with regard to ideas of feudal bondage and communal rights. Taking a fresh look at the evidence, this book argues that there was much more continuity and regional variation in legal record keeping than previously thought. The author also shows that communal governance structures persisted alongside feudal governance throughout the period and that communal rights over land, particularly forests, remained a major point of contention. This book will be of interest to scholars of pre-modern Germany and feudalism in Europe.
