The author argues that the system of land ownership at the time of writing is unjust, immoral, and has disastrous effects on the country, its people, and the economy. The first step to reform, he feels, is the abolition of the laws of primogeniture and entail. He sets out alternative proposals, such as compulsory registration of land ownership, and a system of conveyance to make the purchase and sale of land less costly and burdensome. The author compares the land laws of England unfavourably with those of France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, and America and suggests that England could learn much from these examples. An impassioned call for the redistribution of land and a fairer, more equitable system of land ownership and management, this book reveals the thinking of one of the foremost land reformers of the late 19th century.
