These colophons reveal the pride taken in the new craft of printing, a pride no less strong than that of the scribes responsible for the copying and preservation of texts before the advent of the printing press. As such, this book illustrates the ways in which the earliest printers sought to position themselves not just as craftsmen, but as artists and scholars, and sheds light on the development of the self-conception of the printer as a central figure in the world of learning and culture.
