Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book analyzes efforts made in the late 19th century to promote German emigration to southeastern Brazil, specifically the unsystematic process of German colonization in Rio Grande do Sul. As a result of the author's personal experiences there, this book goes into historical, geographical, and economic detail about the process of German colonization in the region. Instead of a systematic approach, the author argues that Rio Grande do Sul's main German settlements emerged as a result of slow-moving, spontaneous immigrations; German immigrants settled among the region's existing Brazilian population and eked out a living by establishing small farms and businesses. Due to factors that hindered rapid economic development in the area, most German immigrants faced economic challenges, and Rio Grande do Sul did not receive the explosive population growth that some immigration advocates had predicted. The author further examines the infrastructure and other challenges that German colonists faced, providing a comprehensive look at the complex history of German immigration and colonization in southeastern Brazil.
