Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book paints a vivid picture of the events and experiences of the author during WW1 in France, combining personal anecdotes with details about the functioning of an ambulance service on the frontlines. The author served in the American Field Service, initially training outside Paris at an ambulance training camp before being assigned to an active division where he served alongside American and French officers and enlisted men. The service ran an ambulance section with twenty cars and a supply vehicle, working in 24-hour shifts, alternately on duty and in reserve. The Poste de Lecours, where the author's section worked, was just five hundred yards from the German lines and within range of artillery fire, hence the French heavy batteries surrounding the camp, a precaution that did not prevent the odd piece of shrapnel finding its way into their midst. The author's time on active duty was filled with adventure and excitement, but also with the sense of purpose and camaraderie inspired by serving in an elite unit with a distinguished war record.
