This book is the product of an international conference hosted by the Women in Agricultural Development (WIAD) Program at the University of Florida in 1986. The purpose of WIAD program is to promote an understanding of gender and its relevance for agricultural development processes.

Susan V. Poats is the associate director of the Farming Systems Support Project (University of Florida/USAID) and served as the acting director of the Women in Agricultural Development Program from December 1986 to September 1987. She received her Ph.D. in anthropology at the University of Florida and did a post-doctorate at the International Potato Centre, Lima, Peru and is currently responsible for FSSP training and networking activities in Africa. Marianne Schmink is associate professor of Latin American Studies at the University of Florida. From 1983-87 she served as Co-Director of the Women in Agricultural Development Program, University of Florida and as Organizer of the 1986 conference on Gender Issues in Farming Systems Research and Extension. Since 1980, she has been Executive Director of the Amazon Research and Training program at the Center for Latin American Studies, University of Florida. Anita Spring is associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and associate professor of anthropology at the University of Florida. She was director of the women in Agricultural Program at the university of Florida from 1984-86. From 1981-83 she directed the women in Agricultural Development Project in Malawi. She received her Ph.D. from Cornell University and has worked in Zimbabwe and Botswana.
