Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Michael Charlton (illustrateur). 1st Edition. Slight soiling of covers. Inside clean and unmarked. Firelight, the Red Stallion is set in a period thousands of years ago, before there was any recorded history, yet there are many things in it which are based on archaeological evidence of the life of early man. Long before the invention of the first written characters, pictures were painted or scratched on the walls of caves, and those discovered in France and Spain have now been dated to between 50,000 and 10,000 B.C. At this time-approximately the period of the last great Ice Age - there lived in Europe men who already belonged physiologically to our species, homo sapiens, and whose skeletons have been found in a cave near Les Eyzies in the Dordogne. The name of the cave, Cromagnon, has been given to this race of men who lived by hunting large animals with weapons of non-metallic materials. For a long time Cromagnon man has been my particular interest. In this book I have tried to bring him to life. I have had to use logic and deduction to fill the gaps where evidence of certain aspects of upper Palaeolithic life was lacking. But even if we can only say 'this is what it may have been like' instead of 'This is what is must have been life', the story is surely worth telling. Translated from the German by Rosaleen Ockenden. This translation is based on the edition published by Boje-Verlag, Stuttgart, in 1966. The book was originally published by Prisma-Verlag-zenner and Gurchott, Leipzig in 1965.
