So begins the Nobel laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer's telling of the legend of the golem, the clay giant who aids the Jews in their time of need. The golem is brought to life only when the rabbi inscribes the sacred name on his forehead. When Reb Eliezer Polner is unjustly accused of murdering the daughter of dissolute Count Jan Bratislawski, the power of the golem reveals the treachery of the nobleman. This task completed, the golem is temporarily put to rest, to be revived at the cornmand of the Emperor. Then, in an abuse of his holy instructions, the rabbi loses his dominion over the golem. As the mindless and dangerous giant rampages through Prague, the Jews are again threatened, until the only power that can reach the golem's heart is exercised by a young servant girl. It is because of her that the Jews of Prague are finally left in peace. N° de réf. du vendeur 7072101
