DESCRIPTION - In the one-hundred-and-forty year history of Asian-America, fewer than ten works of fiction and poetry have been published by this forgotten minority. AIIIEEEEE! includes the writings of fourteen accomplished Americans of Japanese, Chinese, and Filipino descent. It spans the spectrum of literary genre with surrealistic prose/poetry, plays, autobiographies, short stories, and excerpts from novels. The selections highlight the writers' divergent interests and styles. The language is strong, the characters are forceful, the authors are arrogant and proud. The works explore the problems of self-contempt and the overriding anxiety concerning the dual identity in which the Asian-American feels he must decide to be either white or Asian. The editors say of their work, 'Asian-America, so long ignored and forcibly excluded from creative participation in American culture, is wounded, sad, angry, swearing and wondering, this is our AIIIEEEEE! It is more than a whine, shout or scream. This is fifty years of our whole voice.'. Jeffrey Paul Chan has been the chairman of the Asian-American Studies Department at San Francisco State University. He holds a master of arts degree from San Francisco State University. His works have appeared in Occident, West, Asian-American Authors, Seeing Through Shuck, the Bulletin of Concerned Asian Scholars, and Yardbird Reader. Frank Chin, a playwright, wrote the Chickencoop Chinaman. Hewas the recipient of the Jack J. Flaks Memorial Grant, the Joseph Henry Jackson Award, the James T. Phelan Award, and most recently a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. His works have appeared in The New York Times, Ramparts, Intellectual Digest, Carolina Quarterly, Young American Fiction for the '70s, and Nineteen Necromancers From Now. Lawson Fusao Inada is the author of Before the War, a volume of poetry. Inada spent his early years in concentration camps in California, Arkansas, and Colorado. Educated at Fresno State University, University of California, University of Iowa, and University of Oregon, he is currently associate professor of English at Southern Oregon College. His work has appeared in New Directions, Asian-American Authors, Dues: Third World Writing, Evergreen Review, and Encore. Shawn Wong holds a master of arts degree from California State University. He has been an instructor and lecturer at Mills College. His work has appeared in the Sierra Club Bulletin, Meanings in Language, Asian- American Authors, Bridge, East!
