Joyce Maynard was born in Durham, New Hampshire, in 1953. The daughter of two English teachers, she began writing poems, stories and plays when she was six or seven years old, and by her teens, was publishing stories and essays in Seventeen Magazine. Looking Back was first published in 1973, when she was nineteen years old. Since then, she has been a newspaper reporter and syndicated columnist, a radio commentator and a contributor to many national magazines. She has published four novels, including To Die For, and, most recently, The Usual Rules, as well as a collection of newspaper columns, and a second memoir, At Home in the World. Mother of three grown children, she divides her time between her home in Northern California and Guatemala.
First published in 1973, when its author was nineteen years old, Looking Back: A Chronicle of Growing Up Old in the Sixties has become a classic to many of the baby boom generation, for its sharply observed account of coming of age during turbulent times. Now used in many high school English and social studies courses, this new edition is being brought out to mark the 30th anniversary of the publication of the original, not only for those of Maynard's generation, but to make available, to the current generation of young readers in particular, a work that may inspire them to give shape to their experiences of growing up, and as a reminder that a person is never too young to tell his or her own story.
