Rudolf Kippenhahn, born in 1926- in Barringen (Czechoslovakia), received a Ph.D. in mathematics in 1951 and then switched to astrophysics. During his scientific career he has worked at several observatories, Princeton University and the Max-Planck-institute for Physics and Astrophysics in Munich, before becoming a full professor at the University of Gottingen in 1965 and Director of the Max-Planck-Institute for Astrophysics in 1975. Professor Kippenhahn, who has held visiting professorships at the University of California and at Ohio State University, is one of Germany's leading astrophysicists and an expert on the physics of stars and stellar models.
