Synopsis

Two key ideas in Alfred Adler's thinking are reflected in these twenty-one papers: the individual's striving toward some kind of individually conceived superiority, perfection, or success and the healthy person's need to connect that striving with social interest--concern for the common good. The selections provide a survey of the wide range of Adler's theories and clinical experience and they include a long essay on religion and individual psychology and Adler's account of his differences with Freud. Each selection is given in its entirety, and the volume contains a biographical essay on Adler by his earliest important co-worker, Carl Furtmüller, and an extensive bibliography of Adler's writings.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Originally published in 1965 this volume was intended to supplement an earlier volume of Adler’s work by presenting his later writings which had until then not appeared in book form. It contains 21 papers by Adler, 17 of which are dated between 1931 and 1937, two are dated 1928 and 1929, and two are undated. The Editors believed that in addition to strengthening the knowledge of Adler’s psychology, it would convey to the reader an appreciation of his theory and practice as having been formulated by a man who, perhaps more than any other in his field, felt the great responsibility of the psychologist toward mankind and who was untiring in meeting this responsibility. Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.
