It is the tale of George Binney, a thirty~nine~year~old civilian working in neutral Sweden when Norway was overrun in 1940, who ran vital cargoes of Swedish war materiel to Britain through the German blockade in the Skagerrak, where the Luftwaffe was in complete control of the air and the Royal Navy dared not attempt to provide protection. Loading a number of stranded Norwegian ships with stockpiled goods that would otherwise have gone to Germany, and manning them with motley crews personally recruited from interned British seamen, Norwegian patriots, and Swedish engineers, Binney determined to break out into the North Sea under cover of darkness and bad weather. Despite Admiralty forecasts that such an operation was doomed, and in the face of political objections, five ships carrying a year's supply of Swedish materials for the expanding British war industries were successfully sailed to Britain in January 1941. This was only the beginning. An attempt to sail ten more ships in April 1942, bitterly opposed by the Germans, and delayed for many months by a legal wrangle in the Swedish courts, ended in disaster when six of them were sunk or scuttled and only two got through. But then came the saga of the Little Ships, the motor gunboats that operated out of the Humber to and from the Swedish coast in the winter of 1943~44, defying all that rough weather and the strengthened German defenses could throw at them. The moving spirit in all these operations was George Binney, and despite the losses sustained, his success provided Britain with essential materials at a crucial time. N° de réf. du vendeur 4172303
