António Lobo Antunes's sole ambition from the age of seven was to be a writer. Here, in The Fat Man and Infinity, "the heir to Conrad and Faulkner" (George Steiner) reflects on the fractured paradise of his childhood--the world of prim, hypocritical, class-riven Lisbon in midcentury. His Proust-like memoirs, written over thirty years in chronicle form, pass through the filter of an adult who has known war and pain, and bear witness to the people whom he loved and who have gone into the dark. Stunningly translated by Margaret Jull Costa, in prose that glides like poetry, this is a modern-day chronicle of Portugal's imperfect past and arresting present, seen through the eyes of a master fiction writer, one on a short list to win a Nobel Prize. Readers particularly touched by Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes will be drawn to this journey into the heart of one of our greatest living writers.

Hardcover. Etat : As New. Etat de la jaquette : As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 296 pages. Published in 2009. Retrospective collection of essays. One of Antonio Lobo Antunes' finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. Presents Antonio Lobo Antunes' "Livro de Cronicas/Segundo Livro de Cronicas" in a felicitous English translation. Literary gems on his beloved Portugal. "Alive with the poetry of the everyday and tinged with the gentlest of self-mockery" (J. M. Coetzee). "Antonio Lobo Antunes chooses to manifest his debts to Freud, Joyce, and Faulkner on the surface, but in the depths, he is a great original. His is a very dark and searing vision of reality at its fiercest, and will leave its mark on sensitive readers everywhere" (Harold Bloom). It seems amazing at first that the two greatest novelists of late-modern Europe, the late Jose Saramago and Antonio Lobo Antunes, are both Portuguese, until one realizes that the truest and deepest subject of literature is every human pain, which Portugal, former world empire, impoverished European Union member-nation, and despairing yet still-hopeful people, supplies in inexhaustible abundance. Their language, particularly its tonality, is radically different, and in literature, tone is everything: As Peter Conrad points out, Saramago's is "benign" whereas Lobo Antunes' is "anguished". But their subject is the same: A nation not of contrasts but of extremes - unlike Europe and very much like America. An absolute "must-have" title for Antonio Lobo Antunes collectors. This title is a brilliant collection. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (American) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws or are subsequent printings. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ANTONIO LOBO ANTUNES TITLE IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0393061981. no. N° de réf. du vendeur 24084
