L'opera divenne un caso letterario per l'ostilità degli intellettuali e della critica afroamericana, che accusarono Styron di aver letto da un punto di vista sostanzialmente bianco e discutibile la figura del ribelle Turner. Il libro vinse il Premio Pulitzer e il National Book Award.
