First Printing; Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Near Fine. Illustrated by Ruth Gamper (illustrateur). First Edition. Color; 8 1/2 x 10 1/4"; Unpaginated pages; Hard cover has purple cloth spine with silver lettering. Faint rubbing to covers. DJ has light rubbing; in a mylar cover. Pages are clean and tight; not numbered; 30 pages. Lovely color pictures illustrate the story. 'Strangis draws on his grandmother's stories for this family folktale; Italian American artist Gamper sets the stylized folk figures in the rolling sunlit countryside of southern Italy. Grandfather cannot live by himself any more, and his grandchildren are thrilled to help him move in with them. But times are hard, the family is poor, and Mother can't manage and tells Father that he must take Grandfather to the home for old people. Father and the children set out sadly, carrying Grandfather and his things; then the oldest daughter works out a way to persuade Father to change direction, and in a joyful reversal, they bring Grandfather back home. The telling has the rhythm and simplicity of the oral tradition (here were three daughters: Prima, who was the oldest; Aldora, who was the tallest; and Paula, who was the youngest) , and the detailed, delicate illustrations blend the clothes of the people with the flowing lines and colors of the fields and hills.'.
