From the point of view of the individual living in a difficult economic climate, the most hopeful development has been the recent growth of interest in consumer protection by the legislature, the Fair Trading Act passed in 1973 and the Consumer Credit Act of 1974 which is being implemented gradually, offering a fairer balance in dealings between ordinary people and large organisations.
