The Maitland approach to the management of painful peripheral joint disorders has long been regarded as one of the cornerstones of modern manipulative therapy. Like all successful methods it places as much emphasis on examination of the patient as on treatment, and this balance is carefully maintained in the third edition of the author's classic text.
Bringing the book up to date has required considerable amendment. There have been many advances in all aspects of manipulative therapy of the peripheral joints. For this edition, the sections on examination by passive movement have been considerably expanded. In the physical examination sections, differential tests are described which will permit greater accuracy of diagnosis. More emphasis has been given to recording examination and treatment findings, and the movement diagrams and representations of passive movement grades and rhythms have all been modified for greater clarity.
The sections on techniques and treatments now include an explanation of the importance of compression in treatment movements. For the first time in English, there are totally new presentations of techniques, using groups of specially prepared serial photographs.
Rewritten and re-packaged in a larger, more attractive format, Peripheral Manipulation will remain an indispensable purchase for all therapists learning the Maitland approach or seeking to refresh their knowledge.
