Synopsis

Vascular imaging technologies are developing rapidly. New information which is being acquired using these techniques is redefining our understanding of the etiology, development and distribution of lesions and will be used in the future to guide interventions and to evaluate the success of procedures. Although arteriography remains the gold standard for determining patency and continuity of vessels, several other imaging technologies have assumed increasingly important roles in diagnosis and therapy of vascular diseases. Non-invasive imaging modalities including computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and duplex ultrasound supplement the information obtained from haemodynamic evaluations and more invasive procedures such as arteriography, angioscopy and intravascular ultrasound. This atlas was developed to describe the fundamental technologies related to each imaging modality and to compare the data obtained to establish utility of each technique in particular applications. The information included in this text has been updated throughout the production phase to provide the latest descriptions and discussions of state-of-the-art arterial imaging methods.
