A period of being depressed can be productive or unproductive: when productive it leads to improved understanding and coping, to maturation, creativity, or survival; when unproductive, it maintains the status quo, causes deterioration, or death. Whether the outcome is productive or unproductive depends mainly on developmental and cultural factors. The author gives a detailed account of personality patterns likely to lead to a productive or to an unproductive outcome, and shows how a psychotherapeutic approach can be used, professionally or informally, in helping another person through a period of depression.
