Paperback. Etat : Good. 1. English Site-Specific Art. Performance, Place and Documentation by Nick Kaye is a critical study of art and performance created in direct relation to particular places and environments. The book examines how site-specific practices challenge conventional ideas about the autonomous artwork by making location, architecture, social context and the experience of space integral to the work itself. Kaye explores relationships between performance, installation, conceptual practice and documentation, considering what happens when an artwork cannot easily be separated from the place in which it occurs. Through discussions of important artists and projects, the study investigates interventions in galleries, architectural settings, urban environments and other locations, as well as the problems involved in recording, reproducing and relocating ephemeral or site-dependent works. Combining art history, performance studies and theories of space and place, the book has become a useful academic reference for the study of site-specificity, installation, performance and contemporary art practice. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Site-Specific Art charts the development of an experimental art form in an experimental way. Nick Kaye traces the fascinating historical antecedents of today's installation and performance art, while also assembling a unique documentation of contemporary practice around the world. The book is divided into individual analyses of the themes of space, materials, site, and frames. These are interspersed by specially commissioned documentary artwork from some of the world's foremost practitioners and artists working today. This interweaving of critique and creativity has never been achieved on this scale before. Site-Specific Art investigates the relationship of architectural theory to an understanding of contemporary site related art and performance, and rigorously questions how such works can be documented. The artistic processes involved are demonstrated through entirely new primary articles from: Meredith Monk Station House Opera Brith Gof Forced Entertainment This volume is an astonishing contribution to debates around experimental cross-arts practice. Site Specific Art is the first major study of site specific theatre and performance in North America and Europe since the 1950s.
