Among the figures whose arguments are examined are Edmund Burke, Joseph de Maistre, Johann Georg Hamann, Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi, Chateaubriand, Novalis, Nietzsche, Horkheimer and Adorno, Foucault, Rorty, MacIntyre, Habermas, Oakeshott and John Gray, set against the philosophes of the Enlightenment including Diderot, d'Alembert, Kant and Condorcet.
