Hardback. Etat : New. 219 pages. Edited by Peter Graeff and Guido Mehlkop, this collection of essays examines how capitalist and democratic institutions relate to war and poverty, setting democratic peace theory alongside capitalist peace theory. The editors open with an introduction and close with a concluding chapter. Early chapters look back to Thucydides and ancient Greece to ask whether a democratic peace existed then, define what the democratic peace is and why it should be pursued, and trace the links between production, prosperity, state preferences and peace. Later chapters are empirical. One tests how robust the connection is between market-oriented institutions and policies and economic growth. Another uses correspondence analysis to study economic freedom, wealth and corruption. Others cover varieties of capitalism and social change in rich democracies, and authority as a mechanism of social coordination. The book includes black-and-white figures.
