Synopsis
The book traces the evolution of education policies and philosophies in Singapore and highlights how the context and culture affected the policy formulation and implementation, especially in its recent history. The book shows that Singapore does not treat seemingly conflicting educational philosophies as dichotomies, thereby adopting an extreme position, or debating endlessly the virtues (or otherwise) of these philosophies. Rather, Singapore embraces them as paradoxes and draws strength from the creative tensions generated by these paradoxes. These paradoxes include the co-existence of centralisation and decentralisation; competition and welfare; and holistic education and high-stake examinations. This book does not champion "the Singapore model" but draws lessons for others as it explores the successes and struggles of the Singapore system (especially in the recent years) and examines its key success factors and areas of tension.
