"Rich in character, elegantly written and shot through with the deeper themes of love, faith, loyalty, betrayal and renewal. l was wholly convinced by the imaginative grasp of detail which Provoost displays in this long novel... An excellent, uncompromising read." Carousel
"Teens will find themselves alternately caught up in the story's tension, especially once the rain starts falling, and bored by some of the details and religious and philosophical underpinnings. There are subtly portrayed sexual incidents, too, including a relationship between Re Jana and Ham's wife, but these are small stitches in a vast piece that strikingly reveals the human condition at the hour of its destruction." Booklist
"Provoost does an amazing job transporting the reader into this apocalyptic biblical world. The strength of the character Re Jana is clear. She is a true heroine and we are rooting for her on every step of her challenging journey. Through the use of beautiful language and powerful emotions, Provoost creates a masterpiece. Along with the characters and their struggles, the reader is also confronted with the philosophical questions of the biblical tale. IN THE SHADOW OF THE ARK is an impressive novel that both teenagers and adults will enjoy. " Teenreads.com
"ReJana's point of view allows readers to consider the incredulity and the desperation of ordinary people when faced with this impending alleged cataclysm... Issues raised in the narrative may well provoke readers' thoughts about the nature of faith, goodness and cruelty..." Publishers Weekly
"an unusually rich book. It tackles so many themes, it is so elegantly written, and it is so breathtakingly narrated that it is difficult to remain unmoved." NRC Handelsblad
"Provoost sketches a world that sizzles with activity and teems with life: you can hear the banging of the tools, you can smell the pitch for making the ship watertight and you can feel the builders' delight in their work." De Standaard
