Keith Topping, Paul Cornell and Martin Day?s The Discontinuity Guide is a book for anyone who has ever watched Doctor Who and thought, ?Hang on, that completely contradicts the thing with the Cybermen, unless we count the novelisation, the UNIT dating problem, the second Atlantis, or the fact that time travel has been used as structural adhesive.? In other words, it is a guide to a programme that spent decades building continuity, breaking continuity, forgetting continuity, and then accidentally inventing new continuity from the wreckage. This is not a glossy celebration full of actor headshots and polite captions about ?classic adventures.? It is a fan-brained field manual to the original television series: story by story, monster by monster, error by error, brilliance by brilliance, with plot notes, production oddities, memorable lines, glorious absurdities, continuity snarls and all the tiny alarming details that make Doctor Who less a television programme than a national archive of controlled nonsense. The title is perfect. A continuity guide would be too simple, and probably dishonest. The Discontinuity Guide understands that Doctor Who is held together not by consistency but by enthusiasm, elastic logic, BBC budgets, good ideas, bad monsters, quarry planets, corridors, scarves, moral speeches, wobbly aliens, and the deep British conviction that if one says ?reverse the polarity? firmly enough, narrative repair may occur. This is a universe where history can be rewritten, destroyed, restored, misdated and contradicted before the end credits, so a little discontinuity is really just local weather. Topping, Cornell and Day approach the whole magnificent pile with affection sharpened into forensic attention. They love the programme enough to notice everything wrong with it, which is the highest form of fandom and possibly a medical condition. Here are UNIT timelines, regeneration wrinkles, Time Lord lore, Dalek behaviour, Cyberman redesigns, alien invasions that nobody later mentions, villains with plans held together by string, and monsters whose ambitions exceed the costume department by several parsecs. The great irony is that Doctor Who fans often demand order from a show whose central premise is an elderly alien stealing a police box and interfering with history. Of course it does not all line up. It was never going to. The miracle is not that there are contradictions; the miracle is that, despite them, or possibly because of them, the whole thing still feels like one enormous, beloved, impossible story. For Doctor Who collectors, classic-series viewers, continuity obsessives, trivia hunters, TV historians, and anyone who thinks a plot hole is not a flaw but an invitation to write three paragraphs beginning ?actually,? this is essential shelf equipment. It is witty, detailed, fannish, argumentative and exactly the sort of book that can turn casual viewing into a lifelong concern about whether the Brigadier is aging correctly.
