Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines a pivotal moment in the history of Christianity: the 1595-1596 embassy of Orthodox bishops from the Moscow Patriarchate to Rome. The Orthodox Church had been in schism with Rome for centuries, but this embassy represented an attempt to restore communion between the two churches. The embassy was led by Hypatius Pociej, Bishop of Volodymyr, and included several other prominent Orthodox hierarchs. They traveled to Rome with a letter from Patriarch Job of Moscow, expressing his desire for unity. The mission was successful; the bishops were received by Pope Clement VIII, who granted them permission to celebrate the Orthodox liturgy in Rome and to receive communion from Catholic priests. This book sheds light on the complex political, social, and theological issues that led to the schism between the Orthodox and Catholic churches. It also offers insights into the nature of Christian unity and the possibility of reconciliation between different branches of Christianity.
