Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the early beginnings of German philology within the German Reformation from the 15th century onwards. It explores the interplay between the revival of interest in classical scholarship and the simultaneous rediscovery of German antiquity and literature. The author traces how German humanists like Jacob Wimpfeling, Heinrich Bebel, Conrad Celtis, and others, sparked the initial enthusiasm for German studies through their philological endeavors. This movement was further enriched by the discovery of significant texts such as the Germania by Tacitus, which provided a glimpse into the ancient customs and beliefs of the Germanic tribes. The author argues that this confluence of classical and Germanic scholarship laid the foundation for the development of German philology as a distinct discipline and contributed to a growing awareness of Germany's cultural heritage. This book offers a valuable contribution to our understanding of the intellectual and cultural landscape of the German Renaissance, and provides insights into the origins and evolution of German philology as a field of study.
