Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Good. 2nd Edition. A substantial history of Western science from the early Middle Ages through the Scientific Revolution, bringing both volumes of A. C. Crombie's influential study together in a single volume. Volume I, Science in the Middle Ages, covers the fifth through thirteenth centuries; Volume II, Science in the Later Middle Ages and Early Modern Times, continues the account through the seventeenth century. Crombie examines the development of scientific ideas, observational practices, experimentation, mathematics, astronomy, optics, medicine, and natural philosophy. Particular attention is given to the intellectual continuity between medieval scholarship and the achievements of Renaissance and early modern figures such as Copernicus, Kepler, and Galileo. The work was first published in two volumes in 1952, revised and enlarged in 1959, and issued in this corrected one-volume format in 1979. Condition: Very Good hardcover in a Good original dust jacket. Binding appears firm and square. Pages are clean and gently age-toned, with no ownership inscriptions, underlining, or annotations visible in the photographed portions. Text includes numerous black-and-white illustrations, diagrams, and photographic plates. Dust jacket shows rubbing, handling wear, minor soiling, and edge and corner wear. There is chipping, creasing, and short tearing around the head of the spine, with a small tear near the upper front edge. Jacket remains bright and presents well overall despite the wear. This is the first printing to combine the revised two-volume work into a single hardcover. Long regarded as a foundational survey of medieval and early modern science, it remains useful to readers and scholars interested in the emergence of scientific method and the relationship between medieval natural philosophy and the Scientific Revolution. The one-volume format is considerably more convenient than wrestling two separate scholarly bricks across the desk. Ships carefully packed in protective materials. USPS Media Mail is the standard domestic shipping method unless another service is requested. Returns accepted in accordance with AbeBooks' 30-day return policy. SCI 2a.
