Présentation de l'éditeur

What George Orwell said, what he wrote and what he stood for remain astonishingly alive. Hardly a day passes without Orwell's words or his ghost being invoked: 'Big Brother'; 'doublethink'; 'Orwellian'. Dr Davidson has, in the first nine volumes, returned to Orwell's manuscripts and edited the fiction and non-fiction to what Orwell intended. Similary authoritative texts make up vols. 10-20, which attempt to print all that it has been possible to recover that Orwell wrote. They have full textual explanations and annotations and include seven hundred-odd reviews, political articles, letters, essays and material from Orwell's days at the BBC. Included in the latter are broadcasts covering drama, modern poetry, film, psychology and important programmes on the contemporary problem of India. Each volume includes an index, and there is a cumulative index in Volume 20. Volumes by title are: Down and Out in Paris and London; Burmese Days; A Clergyman's Daughter; Keep the Aspidistra Flying; The Road to Wigan Pier; Homage to Catalonia; Coming up for Air; Animal Farm; Nineteen Eighty-Four; A Kind of Compulsion; Facing unpleasant Facts; a Patriot After All; All Propaganda is lies; Keeping Our Little Corner Clean; Two Wasted Years; I have tried To Tell The Truth; I Belong to the Left

Présentation de l'éditeur

His best-known novels, Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four, are two of the most famous, well-quoted and influential political satires ever written. The other novels in this volume are also concerned with individuals at odds with repressive institutions: the corrupt imperialism of Burmese Days, disaffection with materialistic society in Keep the Aspidistra Flying, the perils of modern suburban living in Coming Up for Air and the down-and-out girls in A Clergyman's Daughter. They all display Orwell's deep understanding of human nature, his biting humour and great compassion.
